Intro

We are seeking stories and songs read and sung by friends, families, and godparents for our child. The voice is a wonderful way to keep in touch over distances and time. Here you will finds some instructions on how to get your stories to us for a child to listen to. You know our kid (if not, you're here by mistake) and we can't wait to hear your stories.

Some example stories might include:

Recording Audio

Really you can use any familiar method to record audio. If you have a field recorder and a good mic go ahead and use it. There are also some excellent USB microphones you can plug into your computer to record. Really though, most any modern cell phone through the build in mic with a sound recording app will do. Some tablets and computers also have good built in microphones. Your headset might do as well. In any case, the following work flow is usually a resonable foundation for a good recording.

  1. Use the best equipment you already have. This is likely your cell phone (with or without a headset). See below for directions and good apps. The app really doesn't matter that much (unless you are using an external mic), there are lots of choices, the one that came on your phone is likely good enough. You just need to be able to export or send the audio.
  2. Find a comfortable, reasonably quiet spot, and record a little bit of your story. Usually you'll be inside, away from things like fans and your fridge. Outside can work as well, but pay attention to ambient noises. Play back the test recording back and see how it sounds.
  3. Start recording, but don't speak for about 20 seconds. This is to get the background noise from your environment and your equipment. It can be subtracted later.
  4. Now record your story. If the story has easy please to break up the text, like chapters, record those in separate files.
  5. Name your files with the title of the story and a serial number if you broke one story up into parts.

Some Recoding Guides and Apps

Sending Audio Via EMail

If your files are small enough to attach to an email you can send them to: usual.luck6819@heibeck.net. On a computer you can just attach the audio files in your email client or through a web browser. With many of the built in iOS and Android voice recording apps it is easy attached them to an email. See directions for iOS and Android (for the build in Pixel app, but the share icon is the same). If you want to upload your audio to a file sharing service (like DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive etc) just send a link to the file or folder.

Uploading Audio

We've set up a simple web site for you to upload to. Our kid's name is the password and you can leave the username field empty. For each file click the "Upload" button, rename the file if you wish, and wait for the upload to complete. If you have several files you might want to put them in an archive (like4 Zip or 7Zip) and upload that file.
